In Chapter 8, “A Coal-Fired Dream World”, Gatto explores more how the big business of the day was intertwined with the creation of the compulsory schooling system, and how schooling was seen as one of many tools to help create a less competitive business environment. Some of my biggest disagreements with Gatto’s history are described over the course of the footnotes of this chapter.
Some of the best sources from this one are Origins of the Federal Reserve System, The Making of the English Working Class, and The Triumph of Conservatism.
