Hooowdy!
Not much happening this week. Been making process learning Clojure, and really enjoying it. Turns out, it’s got a similar concurrency model to Go, which I already like! So that’s a plus.
Consciousness as Metaphor: What Jaynes Has to Offer (link)
Finally, a post on consciousness! Back in March I read “The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind” by Julian Jaynes, and it set off a series of investigations that lead to some big new ways of thinking about the mind. It’s been hard and slow trying to write it all up.
I was originally going to make my first post a response to Jacob Falkovich’s review of the book (I read it because of his book club), but got delayed. Now, Scott Alexander has also written a review, prompting me to finally write an intro post to my thoughts.
Math is “Arbitrary” (link)
Just a shortform teaser for a bigger post. Turns out, different calculators do math differently. What could it mean? You decide! (just don’t do a shitty job)
Lastly, a lovely little gif for dwelling on the “you” that “observes” “yourself”.
Stay Lucky,
